The Glacier and the Beach

The South Shore tour takes you across the stunning and varied landscape of Southern Iceland and shows you places which are a nature lover’s dream. Cascading waterfalls, lowland farmland, high sea cliffs, black lava sand beaches, volcanic rock formations and glaciers are all experienced during this exciting day trip.

You will travel in a comfortable 4 wheel drive vehicle suitable for the gravel road surfaces on which we travel to some of the scenic points we visit. We travel in a group of a maximum of 12 people which we usually find creates a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere which is welcoming for small groups or single travelers. The Guide will have a lot of local knowledge and should be able to answer any questions you might have about the area.

We have lunch at a café in Vik. There are always lots of opportunities to stop and take photographs. This tour includes the following:

Remember the weather is everchanging here in Iceland.

So best to take along both good rain and windgear and good shoes.

Hiking shoes are best suited for Iceland’s rough terrain even on these day tours – If you want to get close and personal or get that good photo shot you might have to cross some rugget land.

Hveragerði we leave behind the city of Reykjavik and head uphill across beautiful countryside to Hveragerði where many of Iceland’s vegetables are grown. This is an area with a lot of geothermal activity and we will see jets of steam rising from deep within the earth.

Selfoss this small town by the river Ölfusá is the municipal centre for the area of Árborg. The legendary American chess player Bobby Fischer is buried in a nearby farm churchyard.

Hvolsvöllur is a small town which is mentioned in Njál’s Saga, a famous Icelandic Saga which tells the story of Njáll Þorgeirsson, a lawyer and sage, and Gunnarr Hámundarson, a warrior. This story is rich with omens and prophecy.

Seljalandsfoss a cascading 60m high waterfall on the Seljalandsá river. Unusually it is possible to walk behind this waterfall which is one of the most picturesque in Iceland.

Skógafoss a powerful and very famous waterfall 25m wide and 60m high. It is easy to get close enough to this waterfall to feel the “spray” or walk up the stairway for a view from above.

Eyjafjallajökull we drive right under the site of the famous eruption of 2010. On a clear day there are spectacular views and opportunities to take that really special photograph.

Vik we stop for lunch at a café in this the most southerly situated village in Iceland. With a population of just under 300 Vik has a wool factory and shop.

Reynisfjara a black volcanic pebble and sand beach from which the dramatic black basalt columns of Reynisfjall mountain rise.

Dyrhólaey see the gigantic black arch of lava which stands in the sea and some truly magnificent scenery. To the east, see the black lava columns of Reynisdrangar rise from the sea, to the north the mighty glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, and on a clear day to the west the coast is visible as far as Selfoss.

Sólheimajökull walk up to the edge of the glacier for a unique experience of the raw power of nature. See the majestic rock formations which have been shaped by the force of this glacier.
